- Esther Peterson, 91, known as the "grand dame of the consumer movement," died at her home on Dec. 20, 1997 following a stroke.
- Esther Peterson was born in Provo, Utah in 1906. She was raised on a farm with her five siblings by her Mormon, Republican parents, Lars and Annie Eggertsen.
- She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1927 and later earned her master's degree in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York.
