- A number of pension funds were hours from collapse when the central bank intervened in the long-dated bond market.
- The Bank emphasized the need for regulators across jurisdictions to strengthen the resilience of the sector, saying that “there is a need for urgent international action to reduce risks in non-bank finance.”
- The past year has been a momentous one for the Bank of England.
- The Government announced shortly after taking office that it had decided to give the Bank operational independence in the conduct of monetary policy.
- A fortnight later, the Government announced a radical reform of the entire structure of financial services regulation, including the transfer of the Bank's responsibility for banking supervision to a new regulatory body for the financial services industry as a whole.
- The Financial Services Authority (FSA). The Bank will, nevertheless, continue its traditional responsibility for maintaining the stability of the financial system as a whole.
- The new Bank of England Act, which will formally introduce these changes.
